The two medals belong to the contributor's grandfather's brother, Sydney Nelson Thurlow of the Royal Suffolks (30997). Sydney was born in the United States and never became a British national. The Princess Mary tin belonged to either Sydney or his brother. Sydney survived the war and transferred to the South Wales Borderers.
Sydney had two brothers, one of which was Harry James Thurlow of the Norfolk Regiment, who was killed in France on 4th September 1916 (see Dead Man's Penny). Sydney's older brother (not named) had children.
