Joseph Redford Rogers, the contributor's grandfather, served as a private in the First World War. Joseph provided assistance to an Officer when his car broke down, which led to him becoming the Officer's driver (and surviving the trenches). Joseph had a daughter (b. 1917) who died of measles while he was still serving. He met her only once when he was on leave.

Joseph died in 1945 while serving his country spray painting helmets in a non-ventilated room which led to lung disease.
