In 1914, Edward Robert "Bobby" Budd (seen in the centre of the photograph) was living in Kennington, South London. He volunteered to join the Territorial Army (4th London Regiment) and saw active service in France and Flanders, Belgium. He was believed to have been killed in a bayonet charge on 27th April 1915. In a letter dated 19th May 1915 (see image), the War Office informed Bobby's mother, Ellen Budd, of his death. He has no known grave and is named among the more than 50,000 soldiers inscribed on the Menin Gate at Ypres, Belgium.
