James Gibson McNaught, born 1866, was a Lt-Colonel in the Royal Army Medical Corps, graduating from Glasgow University Medical School in 1892. He spent much of his career abroad, including India, South Africa, Malta (where he was chief medical officer of the British garrison), and assorted other corners of the Empire! he served with distinction as a surgeon on the Western Front during the First World War (his certificate for being Mentioned in Dispatches for gallant conduct, signed by Secretary of War Winston Churchill, survives). He also commanded a Casualty Clearing Station during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. The war broke his health, and he retired from the army in 1922, dying in 1942.
