Frederick Furey was my great uncle.

He was born 27/02/1889 in Boyle, Co Roscommon, Ireland where his father was in service with the Connaught Rangers 88th Foot. Frederick was one of 8 children born to Thomas and Margaret Furey née Whelan and at the outbreak of WWI Frederick was their only surviving son.

Living and working in Manchester where the family had settled, Frederick was working as an Iron Moulder for a company making textile machines. He married Alice Ann Callaghan in 1911.

Frederick joined the Manchester Regiment "A" Coy, 1st/8th Bn. Service no. 2296 in 1914 and was killed in action on 11th August 1915 at Gallipoli age 25. His name appeared in The Times newspaper dated 27th August 1915 as previously reported missing, now reported killed.

Frederick's name is on the Helles Memorial in Turkey, panel 158-170. The Helles Memorial stands on the tip of the Gallipoli Peninsula where it can be seen by ships passing through the Dardanelles.

He is also on the Irish Roll of Honour.
