Joseph was born 3rd May 1894 to Mary Frankland Wood in Easington, Yorkshire. In 1901 his mother was a widow (Johnson)and a Farmer. He was the Half Brother of Johns' Grandfather James Johnson. In 1911 he was working on the farm of his aunt. His Step Father was H P Pettiford.

Joseph died 17th February 1916 whilst training in Hartlepool aged 22 years. He was a Private in the 3rd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, regiment number 26928. Joseph is buried at Austwick Church Cemetery.
