Village of Komitades (8.02). There is now little cultivation but olives, but Komitades (like all Sphakiot villages) until recently had arable fields as well. The ruined wall in the foreground once enclosed a field, now covered with phrygana (wild undershrubs). On the mountain behind, the cypress woods of west Sphakia straggle to an end; most of the trees are on rocks rather than soil. Looking NE. Panagia I Thymiani (8.01) is marked by red tiled roof in the centre. July 1990.
