Mouth of the Aradhena Gorge. The two level platforms in the rock represent stages of higher relative sea-level during the uplift of west Crete, on a time-scale of several hundred thousand years. The notch in the low cliff, about 4 m above the sea, represents sea-level in Roman times. The arid coast contrasts with the cypress-woods on fissured limestones inland. Looking N. July 1988.
