Eastern Sphakia looking eastward. To the left is the wall of mountains bordering the coast. Beneath it are the fans of scree and gravel, emerging from eight gorges, which merge to form the plain of Frangokastello. The medieval village of Komitades (8.02) stands on a ridge between two gorge-mouths. Above it is the active scree-fan coming out of the Kapnis Gorge. The edge of the plain is truncated by the sea to form low cliffs. In the distance lies Frangokastello Castle. The yellow flowers in the foreground are Asphodeline lutea, characteristic of this area. April 1988.
