Coast below Ayios Ioannis (invisble from the sea). The arid foreground is separated by a great fault-scarp from the pinewoods. The arid slopes are limestone coated with cemented scree, which pine roots cannot penetrate. Beyond the scarp pines grow on a different limestone, which forms cliffs and loose scree beneath, a more congenial environment. Looking N. August 1995.
