This is a translation of the first nineteen lines of the Old English poem The Seafarer; I chose this section as it forms a fairly coherent whole but still gives a strong sense of the atmosphere of the poem.

Translated by Eleanor Crossman from a text edited by Richard Hamer (in 'A Choice of Anglo-Saxon Verse', (London: Faber and Faber, 1970, pp. 184-195). Eleanor has an honours MA in Mediaeval History and is a poet and published writer.
