The church of St Andrew's at Middleton dates to the Anglo-Saxon period, and also preserves a considerable amount of Saxon architecture and Viking sculpturework. The bottom of the tower is part of the original Anglo-Saxon building, and the Saxon door in the wall of the tower has been dated to 1042. The cross above the doorway has been dated to the mid to late eighth century.
The Viking crosses from Middleton are very well known, and they date to the period of the Viking kingdom of York from AD 876 to 954.
