This prismatic animation presents all the appearances of ‘laid(e)’ (plus one of ‘laideurs’) in Noémi Lesbazeilles-Souvestre’s 1854 French translation of Jane Eyre (researched by Matthew Reynolds), showing how they span Brontë’s use of ‘ugly’ and ‘plain’.

Full details of the translations quoted are in the PDF attached to this record.
