Mound 2 was excavated by Basil Brown in 1938, the year before his famous discovery of the ship burial in Mound 1. It was re-investigated in the 1980s and 90s by Martin Carver, who concluded it was originally a rich chamber burial covered by a boat and then buried in the mound. Carver's team reconstructed the mound to something like its original height and profile, the only mound in the royal graveyard for which this has been done.
