While the archbishops of Canterbury were buried in the church of SS Peter & Paul at St Augustine's Abbey, the kings of Kent were buried in the smaller church of St Mary, built in a line behind it. This marker shows the position of the grave of King Eadbald (d.640), along the south wall of the church.
