Exercises on Old English syntax
Traditionally, Old English grammars and manuals have focused too much on morphology and phonology, leaving quite aside the study of syntax (word order). Even today, very few publications contain exercises specifically designed to practise Old English syntax. This set of exercises aims at somehow filling that niche. The exercises are all original and are organised in such a way as to illustrate the many factors that contribute to Old English word-order (from purely structural to pragmatic and processing-related ones). The targets for these exercises are elementary to intermediate students of Old English. Given the fact that some of these students may be unfamiliar with the language I decided to provide glosses and translations for most of the OE sentences, as well as syntactic tags. Also, I decided to systematically underline phrasal constituents, so as to help beginners understand better the constituent architecture of Old English.
