British writer and translator who published under the pseudonym Stephen Hudson and translated the last volume of Marcel Proust's A la Recherche du temps perdu (Time Regained). Together with his wife Violet, Schiff is mainly known for his significant role as facilitator to several major Modernist artists and writers. On 18 May 1922, he hosted the party in Paris that became the only occasion on which Joyce and Proust met. The occasion was the premiere of Igor Stravinsky's comic opera Renard, and guests included Stravinsky himself, Sergei Diaghilev and Pablo Picasso. Dirk Van Hulle and William Brockman
