Actor and the second wife of composer Herbert Hughes. The daughter of Dublin shoemaker James and Maria McKernan, Susan McKernan lived in Drumcondra near the Joyces. As a young woman she moved to London. She attended the Academy of Dramatic Art and, in 1921, joined the Abbey Theatre breakaway company, The Irish Players, for the American tour of Lennox Robinson's The White-Headed Boy. She married Hughes in New Jersey the following year. After Herbert's death in 1937 Suzanne remained in London, dying in Chelsea in December 1972. John Simpson
