Rhodes Scholar, Harvard graduate, and partner in the law firm Quinn, Keiffer and Woodward. Kieffer was the uncle of Helen Kieffer (1905-1958), the young woman who became Lucia Joyce's friend and dance companion in Paris and Deauville in 1922 and 1923. Though he was the successor of John Quinn, who had defended The Little Review's publication of Ulysses, when asked by JJ and Sylvia Beach to represent JJ in legal action against Samuel Roth's unauthorized publication of Ulysses in 1926, Kieffer cabled a curt refusal: "Regret unable to take case."
