A painter, especially of seascapes and landscapes, associated with the St Ives School and a friend of Frank Budgen. Born in London, Louis Augustus Sargent studied at the South Kensington School of Art. In 1901, he lodged with his elder brother Ernest and Budgen in a house in Highbury. After exhibiting in London, Sargent moved to St Ives and, in 1913, married fellow-artist Katharine Evelyn Clayton. After the war, the Sargents returned to London. They spent many years on the continent and met JJ in Paris in late 1920. They returned to St Ives in 1939, where Louis died in 1965. John Simpson
