American novelist, best known for his Jurgen: A Comedy of Justice (New York: Robert M. McBride, 1919), whose eponymous character's racy adventures brought the book to the attention of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice and its secretary, John S. Sumner. Banned, the book became notoriously famous and, after being acquitted in its 1922 obscenity trial, became a best-seller. William Brockman
