George Saintsbury

British writer and scholar of literature. After holding a professorship of rhetoric and English language at the University of Edinburgh for twenty years, he retired to Bath in 1915. Although Saintsbury's A History of English Prose Rhythm (London: Macmillan, 1912) was an important source for the "Oxen of the Sun" episode in Ulysses, Joyce's wish that Saintsbury would write a review of his book (LI 195) was unfulfilled.
