French critic and writer. Jaloux was an early advocate for Joyce among the French reading public, publishing several positive reviews of his works and calling him - along with Proust and Thomas Mann - one of the "three giants" of the European novel. Joyce wrote to Harriet Shaw Weaver on 22 October 1922, "I shall write to him [Jaloux]. I dined with him the night before I left Paris and found him very friendly" (LI 188). In 1936, Jaloux became a member of the Académie française. Dirk Van Hulle and William Brockman
