Augustus Milner
Operatic baritone. Born in Cork, Ireland, he emigrated with his family to Chicago in 1886. He trained as a singer in the United States, moved to Germany in 1912 and then to Zurich from April 1915 where he performed frequently at the Stadttheater and where he met JJ. JJ claimed (letter to Frank Budgen 11 July 1919, LI 127-28) to have been arranging a concert of Irish music featuring Milner at Zurich's Tonhalle; however, the performance seems never to have taken place, for In that same month Milner moved to England. In 1921 he married Dora Row, a pianist who sometimes accompanied him in recitals. During the 1920s and 1930s he had a busy career, performing frequently in operas and recitals and also teaching at the Royal College of Music. William Brockman
