August Suter

Swiss sculptor. Born in Basel, Suter later studied at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he met and became lifetime friends with Frank Budgen. Suter met and became a friend of JJ's while spending the First World War years in Zollikon, near Zurich. Suter is remembered primarily for his public sculpture, including Budgen as one of six figures decorating the terrace of the public buildings at Uraniastrasse 7 in Zurich. After the war, Suter lived primarily in Paris, remaining friends with JJ and seeing him frequently. Though he disliked posing, JJ sat for a sculpture by Suter in 1937, which reportedly was destroyed during World War II. William Brockman
