Alfred Vogt
Ophthalmologist. Vogt studied medicine at the universities of Zurich and Basel, with specialized study in Basel and Turin. He practiced in Aarau and Basel, and from 1923 to 1943 was Director of the Zürcher Augenklinik. Vogt's Atlas der Spaltlampenmikroskopie des lebenden Auges (1921), after several editions and an English translation, remains a standard resource on the subject. Vogt performed cataract surgery on JJ in May of 1930 in Zurich (see Vogt's report, LIII 197-98). JJ continued to consult him in Zurich a number of times throughout the 1930s and expressed great respect for Vogt's skill. Between 1930 and 1939, JJ presented Vogt's daughter, Helene, with several inscribed limited editions of his works; these were donated to the Zurich James Joyce Foundation in 2014. William Brockman
